By Arabs I suppose you're talking about Zanzibarese? If I recall correctly they established a number of client states that relied upon them for guns. Perhaps not a formal colonial system such as that of the European model, but the negative impacts were often worse. The Swazii states on the coast were assimilated societies which the Portuguese disrupted. Egypt, however, is another case. The Egyptions subjugated the Sudan which they ran as a defacto colony employing British officers to train and lead their colonial occupation forces. Ironically the British intervention and occupation of Egypt in 1882 made the latter simultaniously both a colonizing and colonized power. Egypt may not have been the worst colonial power, but its shear incompetence at the game makes it worth noting. |
