I've always politely looked the other way except for one time when I had no choice and even then, I just avoided looking as much as possible. I believe a nursing mother should be able to breastfeed anywhere and in any manner she chooses and in the case of the mall security guard, he should have been telling the men to move along and be more polite not embarrassing the mother of the child. The one time I had no choice is quite funny actually. It occurred while I was in seminary. While in seminary we were split up into teams of 10 with a staff member as our leader and once a month we would be sent to various churches in our denomination that were within 2 hours driving distance of the school and would perform all the services that day. We each took turns delivering the sermon. The month that it was my turn, we went to the little town of Anniston, a small town in the mountains of northeastern Alabama. The church folk were basically hillbillies to put it bluntly. The service went along nicely and I got up to preach and was about halfway through my sermon when I looked down at the first row in my process of making eye contact with as many as possible in the chapel. There sat a comely young lass of about 17 years of age and just as I looked she has unbuttoned the top three buttons of her dress and plopped out her breast to allow her child to feed. I was only 19 at the time and still a virgin. It was one of those moments where the silence is deafening as I pause in mid-sentence, mouth hanging open and could have sworn everyone in the room heard the thump on the wooden lectern due to a young man's natural reaction to such a sight. I quickly recovered and avoided looking in that direction for the rest of the sermon. LOL |
