Not having read the Slingshot article, I am assuming that it concerns Early Imperial Roman auxilia who were armed with shields and short spears, and wore helmets and heavy torso armor. These I would definitely classify as 'heavy' infantry in wargaming terms, based on historical descriptions of their use in battle. On the other hand, the Romans tended to refer to ALL non-legionary troops as "auxilia," including cavalry and skirmishers. These of course wouldn't be classified as either heavy or medium infantry. ;-) Cheers, |

In Slingshot 252, there is a fascinating discussion between Nik Gaukroger and Adrian Goldsworthy on the nature of Roman Auxilia. Do you believe that auxilia should be classed as heavy infantry (in the manner of the legions) or as medium infantry? |
