POLL: Sold Blood for Minis?

Well - an interesting thread, no question. I used to give blood quite a lot (both medically and for the reasons Cold Steel articulated), but a litttle hepatitis problem has permanently stopped voluntary donations.

A small note - as a physician who has practiced in both Canada and the US, I would make a few observations:

i) you can get the best health care in the world in the US
ii) this depends on having good insurance
iii) a good chunk of the people in the US without health insurance (with deference to Brandon) actually don't have it because they can't afford it - but Brandon is right, when people show up in the ER, they get treated regardless - however, for people without insurance, it tends to be later in the course of the disease (and they can be sicker)
iv) this costs a lot - hence the fact that the US spends more per capita on health care than anyone in the world
v) one wrinkle that people tend not to notice - for big US insurance plans, they can dictate care, i.e. just how many tests Joe Smith or Jane Gupta can get in a year, etc.

I liked practicing in both countries; I guess the fact that I practice in Canada is voting with my feet (plus, as noted above, Canadian docs in my area are actually fairly well paid).
