Closing comment from me, on what's really a great thread. If Lee had been more succesful and defeated 1st and 11th Corps, then perhaps the battles at Gettysburg wouldn't have happened the same way it happened at all. Perhaps the next battle would have been the battle of Harrisonburg or Pipe Creek -- who knows. Perhaps Gettysburg would have been another battle in a larger campaign like the one Grant waged in 64-65. Regardless of what could have happened or what actually did occur on succeeding days, I think this bolsters, rather than detracts, from making day one the most interesting, and likely the most decisive set events -- which set the stage for the climatic battles of day two and three -- battles which wouldn't have occured except for the events of one.
