Writing in First Empire magazine, Steve Palatka notes: The Gardes d'Honneur were raised by a Senatus-Consulte of the 3rd April 1813 in an effort by Napoleon to rebuild a viable cavalry force after the catastrophic losses suffered in Russia the previous year.
