Just announced from Universal Pictures is the news that a script by Jared Cowie has been sought for a new movie entitled "Bismark – The Black List". One cynical writer notes that if the Hollywood PC brigade get hold of it, then of the three Hood survivors, one will be a woman, one will be black and the other will be trans-gender. Mind you, if it takes as long as the "Dambusters" to see the light of day, I may never get to see it. |

****Spoiler Alert****** They sink the Bismark. |

It should be spelled BISMARCK that's how the Germans spelled it so I'll go with that. |

I guess Hollywood will reveal that it was in fact Tom Cruise who sank the Bismarck … |

Well, you THINK it was Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson, then he pull off the mask and it was a Woman of Color. But I'm in, as long as they keep Michael Bay FAR FAR AWAY… |

If it's anything along the vein of U-571 the Americans will be sinking the Bismarck….. |

We're just assuming the Bismarck actually sinks in this version. 2000s war movies aren't 1950/60/70s war movies, so it'll be someone's personal journey. Just hope we at least get some good Swordfish CGI clips that someone can parse out and post to Youtube. |

One cynical writer notes that if the Hollywood PC brigade get hold of it, then of the three Hood survivors, one will be a woman, one will be black and the other will be trans-gender. Cynical and ridiculous. I'd like to see the actual examples of historical films where this happens. Even in the original "Sink the Bismarck", as Coelacanth's poster shows, a woman is featured and has co-billing. Oh dear! SO HOLLYWOOD! (Even those it was a British production.) Yeah, if it gets made it will play fast and loose with some facts, they'll make composite characters, and they might even give some speaking roles to a woman. But at least let them make it before we start complaining about the deck color of the Hood. |

The original is one of my favorites. The model work with the ships rivals anything you'll see with CGI (witness the mediocre stuff they had in Pearl Harbor). And I didn't mind the woman because Dana Wynter is just incredibly cute :) |

"I'd like to see the actual examples of historical films where this happens" Well, nobody talked about trans-gender back then, but Hollywood has a long history of making sure a woman is in the mix in war films. And do I really have to research how many WWII/Korean/Vietnam films make sure there is one Anglo, one Hispanic, one black, one Native American, etc. in the pivotal squad? |
Streitax | 06 Feb 2015 9:43 a.m. PST |
And, for the record, the original was a first rate film which cannot be improved upon by CGI. |
Great War Ace | 06 Feb 2015 9:52 a.m. PST |
@Editor Bill: If that is true, where is my long-awaited film about 1066? Looks like a Bismarck film is way down in relative popularity…. |

Visually, CG ships should look great. Flat surfaces are easy and we have lots of experience rendering realistic water. I mean, can't be worse than the models in "In Harm's Way", and I still love that movie. As ever, the script will make or break it. |

@darthofwhatever, The 'mixed bag' squad is so clichéd it's a running joke. |
darthfozzywig | 06 Feb 2015 8:40 p.m. PST |
Like in Band of Brothers, Fury, Saving Private Ryan, Flags of Our Fathers, Enemy at the Gates, inglorious Basterds (abomination that it was), Red Tails, The Great Raid…? Oh wait, they are all pretty recent mainstream Hollywood WWII productions and none of them have the bogeyman "mixed bag" squad featuring women and minorities that seems to get some folks so riled up. I get wanting historical accuracy. I also get that there were black, Latino, and lots of other ethnicities contributing to the war effort. It's probably ok to show that on screen, too, even at the occasional cost of "accuracy". The reality is, this notion that Hollywood messes up WWII movies with "diversity" just isn't true. |

The annual list is compiled with a poll of over 250 development executives and high-level assistants, and contains a ranking of the hot screenplays making the rounds in Hollywoodland, which were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2014 and will not be released in theaters during this calendar year. Basically, The Black List is a list of the hottest projects in Hollywood that you haven't heard of yet the Movie is simply called Bismark and the plot line is described as BISMARCK Jared Cowie As Britain struggles through the darkest hours of World War II, a naval officer, raw from the loss of his ship during the evacuation of Dunkirk, is thrust into the thick of the hunt for the Nazi super- battleship, Bismarck. Based on a true story. Link link |

Based on a true story If I recall correctly, hadn't Captain Shepherd (the Kenneth More character) in the original version just lost his ship and gets the Bismarck hunt on his first day? |
Scafcom1 | 08 Feb 2015 8:34 a.m. PST |
Yep, according to the plot of the 1960 film, Admiral Lutjens( the German commander) had sunk Shepherd's ship some time earlier. |

This will be like "Pearl harbor". That whole Bismark ordeal was kinda sad, IMO. Stupidity killed all those guys on the Hood, and more stupidity killed all those guys on the Bismark. It could have played Hell in the shipping lanes if it ever broke free. I built a high tech scale model of the Bismark, and did a lot of research. It was great for it's time, but didn't seem to measure up to the later Yamato and the New Jersey class ships. Was kinda small and lightly armed. |
ScottWashburn | 09 Feb 2015 1:21 p.m. PST |
Yeah, an Iowa would have had Bismark for breakfast. Bigger, faster, more heavily armed and armored. |

It won't be the PC brigade that gets it. What will happen is one or two Americans will be portrayed as officers and/or enlisted in the RN for each ship. They will be the ones that question or disobey bad orders from each ship captain but end up saving the day for those vessels. In one ship though, the captain won't listen and everything will blow up adding criminally stupid to just stupid as the characteristic of the British. I betcha ducks to dollars. -- Tim |

I'll bet it was those dastardly Brits who sank it.Maybe America will get to do it in the remake, using British actors,of course. |
