In 1776, as part of Howe's force invading offNew York, Lord Cornwallis had command of the [corps de]Reserve, which consisted of the four Grenadier battalions, the 33rd & 42nd regts and I think the Jäger. The Light Infantry battalions were brigaded together separately under Leslie. This grouping was broken up when the British went into winter quarters.
The troops under Cornwallis' command at Brandywine Creek, including most of the above, was a larger 'wing, assembled for that action, taking the Left, as Knyphausen commanded the Right. The 42nd however were in reserve, and the grenadier and light inf. had been reduced to two battalions apiece. Ten days later the 2nd Light Inf. & the 42nd were part of an ad hoc force under Maj. Gen
