There was recently some figures posted on eBay that I had some interest in. The bids came in early and it appeared that the figures would go for more than I was willing to pay.

This time I took a slightly different viewpoint. I placed a maximum bid based on how I would feel if it sold for less than that.

Surprise ending, I won the auction for less than my minimum bid.

that is pretty much the way I bid. I figure if I don't get it, no loss.

Sometimes I'll throw out a bid just so I will get updates when I get outbid, sometimes I'll put my max bid on it and leave it, and sometimes I'll watch an item and jump in towards the end to see what the current bid is. I've used multiple strategies depending on how much I want the item in question.

I put my max in, up front. Then I let it ride. If I get outbid, there will likely be other chances later in life.

Sometimes I will see the same product sell for less than what I paid… I make my max bid, and I resign myself to be happy, no matter what happens. I had to learn to let go. Cheers!

I always snipe in the last few seconds with my max bid.

That way, the final price doesn't get pushed up by folks who just like placing more bids.

I have also used any number of bidding methods, but I tend to be most satisfied when I figure out my true maximum bid under the circumstances, set that number whenever during the auction, then just wait to see what happens. The problem with NOT at least setting a maximum bid in your head is that it creates a lot of angst for yourself there at the end of the auction, If indeed there is a competitor.
