Read the book, watched the series, done some cursory research. but no one ever seems to say exactly who they were fighting – just SS. Looking at HQ 12th Army Group maps, looks like it might have been the 9th or 10th SS. Anyone know for sure? Just curious. |

We are talking Market Garden? I dont have an instant answer but there were not a few battlegroups operating against Hells Highway and not necessarily SS. For example I think the Jagdpanthers were an Army heavy unit. I associate 9th and 10th SS with further north? Probably an answer lies within "It never snows in September". |

It was definitely troops from the 9th or 10th but I can't find anything more than that. II SS Panzer Corps made the assault into the "island". Those are the two divisions in II SS Panzer. |

I thought this was about Sgt Rock and Easy company taking on the SS. My bad. |

10th SS was responsible for the Island area, but had been reinforced with so many additional Heer, SS, Luftwaffe, Naval and training units, that identify the specific subunit involved is almost impossible. It was highly unlikely to have been one of the integral SS Panzergrenadier battalions, as they were down to company strength even at the start of the battle. In the TV show they are portrayed as a fresh unit, so some sort of SS depot battalion I guess. I think the tail end of the campaign is covered in IT Never Snows in September. I'll have a look. |

OK, there is a fairly detailed account of the Battle for the Island on Wikipedia. link It looks like the 101st sector was attacked by 116th Panzer Div and 363rd Volksgrenadier Div. So although they were under the operational command of IInd SS Panzer Corps, they weren't SS at all. |

Reading the Wikipedia article and looking at some maps it wasn't the 116th or 363rd. They were both farther to the west from E company and F company who were involved in this fight. The 101st was overstretched during this battle. It also appears that elements of the 116th were being pushed back by C and D companies to the west. I wonder if this didn't occur right between the 116th and one of the other divisions involved. |
