"Due to inheritance disputes, Mecklenburg was divided into the two duchies of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz by the so-called Hamburg Settlement of March 8, 1701. Mecklenburg-Schwerin with its residential cities of Schwerin and Ludwigslust and, above all, the Baltic Sea port cities of Wismar and Rostock served as a retreat and supply base for the Allies in the fight against the French in 1813-14. The significantly smaller Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz with its residential town of Neustrelitz was less important. From 1785 to 1837, Friedrich Franz I was Duke, and from 1815 he was Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Duke Charles II ruled in Mecklenburg-Strelitz from 1794–1816. Politically, Mecklenburg-Schwerin was close to Russia, Mecklenburg-Strelitz through the marriage of Princess Luise to the heir to the Prussian throne and later King Friedrich Wilhelm III. connected with Prussia…"
