My club doesn't really do historicals (I do) but I was thinking of doing a bit light RPG'ing using Alexander Scott's cult Maelstrom rules for the C16 possibly using English privateering as the back drop. Having finished Hugh Bicheno's Elizabeth's Seadogs in the last couple of years I then thought a matrix-type campaign game run over an evening might be fun – and may be entice some of the groups more boardgame orientated players in. Get a map and a few counters printed out. Each player gets a pot of cash to buy ships and/or invest in other peoples expeditions … and then watch them abandon each other the moment their investment is at risk! The Spanish probably being run by the GM and may be some kind of reactions table or card deck. The obvious question is has someone already published a set of rules that covers this kind of thing or even a boardgame? |

I'd be interested in that too. |

It's not quite what you describe, but Voyage by the Perfect Captain might give you some ideas. Their Spanish Fury 'family' of games also has modules for duels, skirmish actions, battles, sieges, and naval actions if you want to expand your campaign in due course. |

I know the "Spanish Fury" series….but not anything about "Voyage". Will have to look for it. |
