1812 era Russians made their first appearance on the club battlefield last night. Unfortunately, they weren't successful. On their left flank their Lithuanian Uhlans were routed and a horse artillery battery was captured by some incredibly brave French Hussars. On their left flank an incompetent brigade commander failed to advance his command on a number of turns, complicated by the fact that their supporting cavalry didn't seem to do much, save engage in some elaborate dressage! The centre of the line held out reasonable well, but started to crack as the French moved excess forces in from the flank to aid their frontal assault. Never mind. The Russians, merely retired from the field of battle, leading the French invaders further into the endless vastness of continental Russia.

We always think of this campaign as being snowy throughout, however snow didn't fall until the retreat was well underway – about two weeks after leaving Moscow. The Grande Armee of half a million men was already reduced to slightly more than a 10th of its original size by that time. General Winter had nothing to say until that point. |

Can't expect any newly painted army to do well in it's first battle. On the upside, the monkey is off it's back now. |

The dust and the heat…as well as scorched earth played a huge part…as well as typhus |

Yes Frederick. Yes Flashman 14 If fighting the campaign from a historic viewpoint the battle above is a Russian victory because the French could not destroy or stop the Russians retiring in good order. The only way for the French to win such a campaign is for either the Russian 1st Arm or maybe 2nd Army to be destroyed in fist month of the campaign. Even Davout could not stop 2nd Army joining 1st Army around Smolensk. French did not destroy Russians at Borodino. If anything its was the heat on the march in that caused the French to fail not the cold on the way out. Its a very hard almost impossible campaign for the French to win. Blame Napoleon |
