Regardless of the movies themselves, and if figures were available for both, which ape style would you prefer to game if you were into POA? Most importantly . . . why? |

"Regardless of the movies themselves" Sorry. Meant to say "regardless how much you like the movies themselves . . ." |

For me it would have to be the original versions. Probably because thats what sticks in my mind most, as I grew up through the 1970s. I did not like the 2001 remake, so the figs would have to resemble the earlier version. |

1968 version. Wanting to game with the figures and liking/not liking the movies are the same thing. There is nothing in the new film that is as good as its counterpart in the first one and that includes the look of the Apes. |

1968 version. I know you said regardless of the movies themselves but the original movie was a more faithful adaptation of the book (minus a few things). I'd even take tv series versions over the second movie versions. picture picture picture |

Those Monolith figures are excellent. I'm also glad to see their expanidng on thier classic Flash Gordon range. I'm not really into sci-fi gaming but for classic films like Planet of The Apes & Flash Gordon I would make an exception. I always wondered why some miniature company never really got into the Flash Gordon realm. Especially when you could create such great armies, like Ming's or The Hawkmen, The Lizardmen and those great spaceships. I also like the original Apes movies, besides an Ape army you could also buld an amry of those underground mutants. Way cool!! |

taking into consideration the Creative drivers of each project, I would have to go with the '68 version. Rod Serling versus Tim Burton? Tim has his chops to be sure, but c'mon
. thats a no-brainer! |

Eureka used to do some very nice '68 movie ones prior to the boiler suit apes they now offer. Sadly they yanked the line when some dipwad started spouting off about IP and copyright infringements I think. Check out the Apemen with guns here. link |

Sorry, guys. Due to Hurricane Rita, I was not able to follow your comments until now. My own personal movie choice is definitely 1968. It was groundbreaking on so many different levels. However, the armor on the 2001 apes and their horses sure looks awesome enough to have inspired someone by now. They would definitely make amazing 28mm's!!! |
Cosmic Reset | 24 Sep 2005 6:33 a.m. PST |
Still one of my favorite movies, I would have to go with the 1968 vrsion. In fact, after seeing a game three years ago, run by fellow TMPer John Leahy, I decided to add some to my near future stuff, but by the time I was ready to order, the Eureka figs had been pulled. |

The 2001 apes sort of remind me of LoTR orcs, probably just because of their primitive armor and bestial fighting styles. I'd vote for the classic Apes also. This setting just screams out for some Chain Reaction gaming. |

I would be up to doing either or both!!! Being such a popular novel and movies, I am surprised that more manufacturers have not joined in and issued their own POA figures. Eureka should have been braver about their original line of apes. |
The Gonk | 24 Sep 2005 7:24 a.m. PST |
The original, of course. How can you seperate your feelings for the movie from the game? You're gaming the movie! You can't beat the original PotA. Besides, you can get some great quotes off the first movie. "Get your paws offa my dice, you damn, dirty ape!" "You rolled another six!" Fall to knees. "God damn you all to Hell!" |
Cacique Caribe | 24 Sep 2005 7:43 a.m. PST |
Crazy, isn't it? Liking a movie, including the amazing quotes, but thinking that the wardrobe could have been updated!!! As long as they are not just regular jumpsuits like Eureka did later. Now, that was lame. Besides, I think that creating a new alien looking wardrobe would keep a manufacturer from getting into quasi-legal repercusions. |

Are you saying things evolve over time!? That's Heresy! |
Cacique Caribe | 24 Sep 2005 9:39 a.m. PST |
I am a heretic? Cool!!! Andy, I actually think that, in the abscence of companies brave enough to provide us figures that are exactly like the movie, they should circumvent the loop holes but stay within the theme. The Eureka jumpsuits just don't do it for me ("Beneath" is my least favorite of the POA movies). Are the Clifthanger apes 28mm or are they really bigger? |
jpattern | 24 Sep 2005 2:11 p.m. PST |
1968. Not just the apes and humans; I liked the 1968 Ape City better, too. The only thing I really liked in Burton's flick is the red ape tent. I'd like to have some of those in 28mm for various fantasy armies: Nomads, Barbarians, Elves, etc. |
Cacique Caribe | 24 Sep 2005 5:14 p.m. PST |
Ah!!! So I am not the only one thinking of picking and choosing elements from both movies. Very nice. |

Hi. i am a pretty big Apes fan. I have a largish eureka Ape army. I built a slave wagon and an artillery limber for them so they could march to war battling the mutants or others. I definitely prefer the 68 version (both the movie and the look). The 2001 may have been more realistic. But the poor quality of the movie left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. I have also dreamed about doing the battles from the last two Apes film. I can do the one versus the mutants. But need to pick up the other apes at some point. Here is a link to a pic of the game Irishserb mentioned. tinyurl.com/co2gx Thanks, John |

I love the look of the 2001 movie
especially the armour on General Thade
.would love to see some figures for them! |

The armor does look good! picture link picture link link I also think that the new version of apes makes it more gameable (is that a word?), since neither side has firearms. CC |

Check out these Ape conversions I am working on: link The photo folder includes sculpted "face plates" attached to Warzone figures (I still need to add hair to the rest of the heads), and a full bare head, a full helmeted head and a few "face plates" I have sculpted to experiment. Let me know what you think. Thanks. CC |

Ok. I have 10 of the now-illegal Eureka POTA cavalry and about 15 foot. Well . . . this is where my POTA humans are going to live: link Based on the many interesting and provocative comments here: TMP link TMP link TMP link TMP link I hope the Apes don't mind getting a little wet. He, he. CC |

I have always liked the '68 designs. Like CC I have some Eureaka minis. I only have about 12 foot troops and NO mounted. I wish I had more of Both

There is no question the 1968 version was better in terms of story but counter to pretty much everyone else I'm going to Tim Burton version for a game. I loved the sets (JUNGLY!) and the design of the apes of the Burton film (as well as the Dark Horse comics that were done on the same POTA world). And as I think playing a game based on a film is almost always playing out what one would think would have been much better, there is much more room for me to fiddle about with setting up a game I like with the newer version. If there were figures from the new film produced, I'd be buying them (not that I would not buy the old Eureka 1968 ones if I could). |

The real (original) figures. I wouldn't game with no jive turkey figures from the remake. Although, Helena Bonhom Carter looks better with the ape makeup left on! |

Neither, it looks more like a fantasy piece to me then something from either Planet of the Apes version. |
