A project for my Back of Beyond Bolsheviks army:

I've painted up some of Company B's Italian vehicles using acrylics with no problem. However I also bought an Sdkfz221 armoured car and the same acrylic paint has just puddled on it as if I was painting with water ! It seems to be totally different resin material, presumably because the level of casting detail is so different. (It almost looks 3D printed). I washed the casting beforehand and eventually I got the paint to spread after leaving it to dry for a few seconds but it has needed a few coats which makes the paint finish uneven and starts to obscure the detail. Any ideas? Does it need a spray primer? (from an auto shop maybe?)

Personally I always use auto primer before painting on any material, but especially resin as it can vary from mix to mix.

I'm not sure, but I think Company B's resin stuff is cast by Die Waffenkammer/JTFM? He recommends using an enamel primer. I have used alclad successfully.

I use the self-etching auto-primer on all resin models, including Company B and JTFM.

I have had no problem painting a number of Company B vehicles. I've done them with straight Valio paint. Then covered them with polyurethane varnish.

We haven't had an issue with this model before. We always recommend a detergent scrub followed by a primer coat. We have found that a light coat of Rustoleum auto primer, available in light gray, dark gray and red oxide does the job without obscuring detail.

Thank you to all respondents. (Special thanks to Bruce from Company B – I really appreciate that). I've finished the inking, highlighting and weathering and it has come up very well. (I was starting to despair a few days ago!) I've already got some primer ordered up in anticipation for next time. Maybe it was just the mix for this one or I didn't was it adequately but the fact remains that it looks a really good model with great detail and I'll be getting some more from the UK supplier – and I'll base those with spray primer !
