Any suggestions for Vallejo paints to cover the Russian Army of WW1. New project in 15mm.
Thanks
Bede

Brown? I usually just use English Khaki (iirc Vallejo 'English uniform').

WWI was more of a greenish khaki, wasn't it?

I agree with LtJBSz. The Russian uniforms did have a greenish khaki color.

Like these chaps?

Brown in the top picture and green in the bottom.

Perhaps as with WW2 Russian khaki you can go greenish or brownish, depending.

Remember, Russia is/was a big country with uniforms made in several different locations. Cloth and dye consistency would not have been easy to maintain so different shades would be common, even in the same units.

Somewhere I have an old issue of Militaria magazine that has Czarist uniforms from WW1. The color photos show varying shades of greenish khaki. One thing the issue mentions is that the WW1 gymnestroika would often fade to a lighter shade than the breeches. Sometimes in b&w photos the shirt appears almost white.

@MR: The top picture shows greatcoats, which could well have been a different colour from the tunic and trousers – note the greenish trousers on one of the figures.

I'm with the "slightly greenish tinge" mob .. when I paint mine I mix on a palette, using the Vallejo English khaki, and adding small amounts of blue to it. The blue brings in that greenish tinge, and by mixing on a palette I get slightly different shades for each batch. This is nicely suggestive of varying degrees of fade, and also the variations in manufacture. Scroll down here and you'll get varying photos of the end result.

Hi

I use Vallejo yellow green (954) as the basis for my Russian uniforms and then add other shades as required. English Uniform mixes well

The ones I am painting in 15mm are Olive Green with Brown washed over, and then lightened a bit. Look a bit green of course but not bad.

Now onto the Greatcoats!
