I bought some of the new (i.e. the relaunched range) Devlan Mud wash from Games Workshop a while back and have just got round to using it…

Boy does it stink!!! It has possibly the worst smell I have ever come across for a wash. It slowly fills the space around my painting area until I have to stop and walk away. The figures I use it on have to be left by themselves until they dry. It is seriously that bad.

So is it just a isolated incident or have others experienced it. Tempted to go to GW and try to exchange it…

Privateer4hire04 Jul 2012 2:27 p.m. PST

It always stinks in my experience.
It's an awesome wash but it smells bad.

David Manley04 Jul 2012 2:29 p.m. PST

It truly is the skunk of paints!

Fishbuckle04 Jul 2012 2:36 p.m. PST

Wow, really?! I find that surprising given that the one I bought from the old range didn't smell at all! Disappointing!

Darkoath04 Jul 2012 2:38 p.m. PST

Is it still called Devlan Mud? And does it work the same as the old Devlan Mud?

abelp0104 Jul 2012 2:46 p.m. PST

My original ones stink, excellent wash, but as stated, a real stinker!

*Suble suggestion that a disgruntled GW ex-employee took a box of empty DV bottles to be filled in the factory with him to the bathroom after a particularly nasty snack of burrito,, scuttlefish and aspharagus*

Fishbuckle04 Jul 2012 2:48 p.m. PST

It seems exactly the same to me. Aside from the smell. Maybe I just got lucky with the first one. It is a shame as I may decide not to buy it again. The smell was really that strong (for my nose anyway!).

My Devian Mud wash also went "stinky", but only after a couple of months of use.
I bought the new one (not sure what is the new GW name for this wash) and it is still smelling "good" I guess it is a matter of time. : )

Crucible Orc04 Jul 2012 4:36 p.m. PST

the new name of Devlan Mud is Agrax Earthshade

I find the new ones i get up here in Canada are far less smelly then the old Devlan mud.

i love the smell of devlan mud in the morning

Delthos04 Jul 2012 5:57 p.m. PST

Yeah, stinky stuff.

ming3104 Jul 2012 6:22 p.m. PST

Smells like bad peanut butter to me . and all the washes smelled like that . Great washes but smelly

dampfpanzerwagon Fezian04 Jul 2012 7:03 p.m. PST

Yes Very Smelly.

Tony

Mako1104 Jul 2012 8:26 p.m. PST

Perhaps that is how it gots its name…..

Fishbuckle04 Jul 2012 11:21 p.m. PST

Crucible Orc: Thanks for pointing that out. In that case I should correct myself and day that my DM is not from the new range, as I previously thought, it is just the label had changed compared to the older pot I had.

Just goes to show how often I buy new paints from GW!

I might just pop in today and buy some Agrax Earthshade!

basileus6604 Jul 2012 11:34 p.m. PST

In my experience Devlan Mud stinks, but Agrax no. And I have both.

Brummie Lad05 Jul 2012 1:37 a.m. PST

Devlan Mud stinks as well. Haven't smelled the new one yet. Or should that be haven't "used" the new wash yet!?

Muerto05 Jul 2012 2:34 a.m. PST

The figures I use it on have to be left by themselves until they dry. It is seriously that bad.

A few guys at a game having gamers' funk isn't unusual. It is if those guys are on the table.

It reminds me of when some guests of Her Majesty were denied something while making licence plates at HMS Pentridge in Australia. The white paint on thousands of plates cracked, owing to an added fluid.

Well, I got some Agrax Earthshade during my lunch break, thankfully avoiding any kind of hard sell on 6th Edition 40k.

Will open it later and see what it smells like!

wehrmacht05 Jul 2012 8:45 a.m. PST

Smells like… VICTORY!!

darclegion05 Jul 2012 8:57 a.m. PST

Alot of the "old" Citadel washes have some foul smells. The Devlan Mud is different from the new "Agrax Earthshade", slightly. The Earth shade is a bit darker than the Devlan Mud, but seems to flow better, slightly. Smells better, I guess, but Im so used to the smells, it doesnt bother me. Ive probably spent about $300 USD in the past 3 years on wash, mostly the Blab Black, which smells too. Its most likely the flow activator they use, or used to use.

It's funny. I have never had a problem with Badb Black or Devlan mud before this one pot. I'm happy to accept some smell, but when you are painting in the lounge and the wife comments from a few feet away… well, you know something is up…

Dashetal05 Jul 2012 9:36 a.m. PST

Rumor has it, that it was formulated from run off from one of those malodorous war gamers captured at a convention

darclegion05 Jul 2012 10:23 a.m. PST

My wife said the same thing…I knew it has a funky smell…but the wash is assume, so I didnt mind, but my wife on the other hand…stays out of the room….and leaves me alone for awhile when I wash….

not so bad

tom

wehrmacht05 Jul 2012 11:03 a.m. PST

Ironic when you consider that we encourage wargamers to "wash" so they DON'T smell bad…

richarDISNEY06 Jul 2012 8:16 a.m. PST

Yea…
When using it, I light a small candle at my desk…
beer

Lordgoober06 Jul 2012 2:56 p.m. PST

there was apparently some issues with the late batches of the washes from the old suppliers before they switched to the new line and this smell issue (apparently sulfur related) was one of the reasons GW went to the new supplier.

Fishbuckle07 Jul 2012 2:44 p.m. PST

Interesting. That would explain the smell then… Happily, I opened my Agrax Earthshade today and found it was foul odour free!
