I plan on basing my late 17th century armies as 18 figure battalions: essentially 3 40x30mm bases-one base of command and pike for the center and two bases of musket. I am guessing that I will base cavalry squadrons as 3 horse per 40x30mm base. Can this be used for BLB? I recall that the rules recommended a separate pike base to the rear. My idea is to base my armies in way to use different rules….

You should be fine. Need to track who's "All muskets" and who not. Essentially the pike block/base is a marker…plus it looks cool if you can field a seperate one.

Now for the GNW you'll be fine there, since BLBv2 calls for pike mixed in with the command stand for both the Swedes and Russians.

There are various nationalities that dropped the pike, so ommiting the pike would not be an issue there either.

Bottom line, as long as everyone is good with that in the game.

We use the 40 x 30 mm base for our BLB games. It it easy to mount your pikes on a separate 40 x 15 or 20 base and place it behind or ahead of your command base. We haven't played pre-WSS or GNW yet.

Here at Reject control we base our NYW figs like so,
Infantry on 35x30mm
Cavalry on 40x40mm
Pike as Shagnasty says on a separate base 35x15, behind the command base.
Hers's a pic to help!!
