Back when I started in miniatures, there was a lot of talk about converting deordorant containers into various vehicles. Are people still doing this?

If so, how about folks post pics of their vehicles?

You missed a competition for this just a couple months ago!

Eli Arndt03 Jul 2011 8:23 a.m. PST

Specifically for deodorant containers?

Waco Joe03 Jul 2011 8:26 a.m. PST

Ha, I was looking at a deodorant container the other day and remembered back to that old White Dwarf article. Mine had a shell in the nose to make it look like a flying narwhal.

Flashbacks to "Rouge Trader"?

Indeed. But I've been accumulating them with plans to do something with them someday and just wondering if people are still doing this.

My personal plans are for something in 15mm scale for my scifi stuff.

I need to finish this one before I can make more.

Jakse37503 Jul 2011 9:55 a.m. PST

the problem here is that you have to actually use deodorant in order to have the containers to convert. And according to my nose that happens less often than necessary when dealing with this crowd…….

Yep, I finally emptied a suitable one for a spaceship.

Eli Arndt03 Jul 2011 11:10 a.m. PST

I must admit to having bought them just to use them for building.

I use soda-stream syrup bottle tops as well.

Space Aardvark03 Jul 2011 2:14 p.m. PST

Fantastic! I convert pill bottles and bits of junk to make scenary bits for my starships (like generators and alien devices) mostly coz I spend my cash on figures and can't then afford resin cast scenary.

my five year old b2 just fell off the stool next to me on seeing the pink bottle. thats awesome! maybe bill should put children warnings now we have pictures.
my wife brought home some new shampoo yesterday with funky square bottoms that run into a circular top. i mentioned that i want the containers when she was done. she didnt bat an eyelid. :) i might keep her.

Eueuww…Eli, you should use them…people will come around you again without making that face…you know, that face…

:)

Eli Arndt03 Jul 2011 3:00 p.m. PST

I do have some that I DO USE. I was just saying that I've been known to buy products just for the container they come in.

Smartass grin

Great pictures – like a lot of people I gathered a pile of interesting stuff together for scratch building – had a clear out a while ago when I realised that I'd only made a few clutter/rubble bases and everything was getting put off until some imaginary future of plenty of time !

As I still wash regularly I'll be ok if the days of idle time do ever arrive.

I just posted the rules for Trash Bash 2012. It's not deodorant containers this time but candy containers.

Post is here:

QUESTION:

What's the best glue for attaching bits to those deodorant containers?

Dan

Eli Arndt26 Jan 2012 2:58 p.m. PST

Good question. Superglue just slips right off.

-Eli

LordNth26 Jan 2012 3:47 p.m. PST

I hope so, I just emptied one and my spare wheels from Combat Wombat just came in.

roebeast4526 Jan 2012 3:56 p.m. PST

I go over the whole thing with sandpaper before I try to glue to it and I use Gorilla Brand Super Glue. I also use JB Weld epoxy if I know it's going to be a high stress join.

Cacique Caribe26 Jan 2012 4:33 p.m. PST

Hmm. I thought all Super Glues (Cyanoacrylate) were created equal.

Dan

Eli Arndt26 Jan 2012 4:48 p.m. PST

Gorilla glues are almost evil.

roebeast4526 Jan 2012 6:01 p.m. PST

Gorilla Super Glue has rubber in the CA so it doesn't seem to "pop" free as easily. I think that there are differences in various CA glues but I've not done the research to verify. I stick with what I like. (man, that was bad.)

I'm actually wondering now if regular Gorilla Glue might work as well, just not as quickly.

BlackWidowPilot Fezian26 Jan 2012 6:43 p.m. PST

Roebeast, this time I'm in for sure! I have three Mentos containers I emptied out last week for just such a project… three identical heavy cruisers in fact….evil grin

Mentos Gum comes in a couple varieties of plastic flip-top container. Good starship size, too.

Cacique Caribe27 Jan 2012 4:00 p.m. PST

Ooo, thanks. Must look them up.

Ok I have to admit this thread had me looking for Bulk Deodorant tubes for sale,

LordNth28 Jan 2012 7:37 a.m. PST

And this thread had me cursing that someone threw away my empty deodorant container.
Next time I see Axe on clearance at Target for under a buck I'm getting an arm load.

This facility uses a large yogurt container, baby's liquid medicine syringe, water bottle, small yogurt drink bottle, and bendy straw among other bits. The only "real" wargaming bits are the AT-43 walls along one edge.

BlackWidowPilot Fezian31 Jan 2012 2:12 p.m. PST

Ah, the old "Defend the Water Condenser Plant" gambit! Excellent use of the recyclables, Wartopia. I still say some of the very best sci-fi terrain comes from these humble beginnings… no school like The Old School!evil grin

New photos added, including the other hover tank made from a cheese container and plastic Xmas ornament, and my 1/72 scale BOLO kitbash utilizing a 1/35 scale tank kit and a small plastic kit of the Millennium Falcon for the primary gun turret:
