Thinking mainly of battle scenes rather than the overall movie, what are some of the best and most "realistic" battle scenes in your opinion? |

Boys in Company C – bridge scene |

The night-time trenech fighting around the bridge in 'Apocalypse Now', lifted straight from Micheal Herrs 'Despatches'. |

I'm partial to the combat at the end of Go Tell the Spartans. The battle on the Hill in Hamburger Hill is pretty intense too. Thanks, John |

depends if you are looking for Hollywood or more realistic. For Hollywood: My favorite is the helicopter attack on the VC base on the coast from "Apocalypse Now". More Realistic (but never the real thing): I always liked the opening ambush in "Platoon" at the bunker complex. The one where Sgt. Barnes I walking forward screaming to get return fire going and stop hiding to the riflemen in the platoon. |

I've always enjoyed the hill attacks in "Hamburger Hill". "Firebase Gloria" is good as well. Any movie that actually stars R Lee Ermey is at least good for some mindless fun :) |

What about "We Were Soldiers". The scenes seemed pretty realistic and quite intense. David S. |

Agree about "We Were Soldiers". Great battle scenes. |

Missing in Action when Col. Braddock is asked by the helicopter pilot "Where to?" and he replies "Saigon!" Oh, battle scene, then We Were Soldiers when Sergeant-Major Basil L. Plumley says "Gentlemen Prepare to defend yourself" and following combat. |

I'm partial to Hamburger Hill since I sort of kinda was in the movie. They sent a 2nd unit to Ft Campbell back when they were filming for background weapons fire. I was an M60 gunner and was selected to spend the day at the range. Their were 6 m-60 teams total. The sound team had set up mics all over the range. Each team was given a number and the director would say "Ok- when I say action I want 1 and 2 to fire a 3 second burst then gun 4 do a 5 second burst 2 seconds after they finish firing" We were out there all day and burned around 6000 rounds or so. The coolest thing was they had a lavish catering unit there with tables, chairs and awnings for the crew and we had MRE's and a shady spot in the dirt behind the range. So when we broke for lunch we all went off to a corner of the range under some trees and started opening the MRE's. The 2nd unit director came over and asked what we were doing- he said we were considered "crew" and to go get in line for food and sit with everyone else. That was neat- food was great and everyone swapped stories of military BS vs Hollywood BS. |

Interesting, no one mentioned full metal jacket

The city fighting scenes in Full metal Jacket. When everyone is opening up on the three story building, as well as the sniper section. |

Tha camp assault in Green Beret is pretty good, We where Soldiers is one of my favoured movie (but battle scenes in Boys of Company C are good), do not care for platoon. The Helicopter assault in Apocalyse Now is nice but is too fake, the mexed an air assault with a gunship strike. The Iron hand mission in the Flight of the Intruder is good as the completely fake raid on Hanoi, but still Dafoe is a spot on bombardier/navigator. The second bomb run when the pilot is going religious and he is just passing data is something approaching perfection. Hamburger hill is not bad, and after having read Zaffiri book it made sense. The artillery scene on Paul Schoffendoffer (sp) Dien Bien Phu is good, when the unnamed Brounbrouck decides to defend the battery and order "deabuchez a zero, feu au volonte" is nice, sadly the entire action is quite short. Is someone made anoter movie on DBP and put the full attack on the 1re BEP and the 5me BPVN attack to retake eliane and do it weel with the german legionaires singing anne Marie and the vietnamese paratroopers la Marseillase while attacking I probably will weep byut I will be happy. |

FMJ street fighting, We Were Soldiers. |

I will third "We were Soldiers". Blazing fast, confusion, zipping bullets, screaming wounded. The scenes were all approved by the vets that fought, and the author who led them. |
Martin Rapier | 04 Mar 2011 6:47 a.m. PST |
I specifically didn't mention FMJ as I found the 'combat' rather unconvincing, preferred the first half of the film. There was just one very short sequence which was good when the VC guys ran across the road at moderate range. |

Very small-scale compared to the others mentioned, but '84 Charlie MoPic' is outstanding. |

1)The closing scene of the Green Berets with John Wayne walks along the beach holding the hand of the Vietnamese boy as the sun sets majestically into the South China sea. 2) The battle scene in 'We Were Soldiers' where a visbly tired and emotional Mel Gibson, sways unsteadily on his feet and screams at his unseen foes " you #@$@, godless, jew, n****r, #@*%$, British, b*****ds, I hope you all marry a #%@*& Russian too !" Actually, I think that may have been one of the deleted scenes. You can probably find it on Youtube or one of Mel's hilarious out take and blooper videos. |
Lion in the Stars | 04 Mar 2011 1:44 p.m. PST |
My favorite is the village assault at the start of Apocalypse Now. I know, not realistic. Just visually spectacular. I think the most accurate battle scenes are the heliborne assault in We were Soldiers, and the cityfight in Full Metal Jacket. |
BW1959 | 04 Mar 2011 7:48 p.m. PST |
How about in 'We Were Soldiers' when Sam Elliot says "..Custer was a pussy." A fav line for me. |
