I have started my new project which is the period 1799 – 1807 covering the Mysore and 2nd Mahratta wars in India. I have posted on our blog link showing ny efforts so far. I received a lot of information from fellow TMPers a while back when I appealed for reading material, thanks again! I was wondering if anyone else has built collections or wargamed based around this theatre and period? I am looking for further inspiration! thanks. Dave.

Hey Dave I'm sorry your thread has descended into the gutter so quickly – my bad!

I can't help you in any way except encouragement! Wellesley's (happy now Dutch?) adventures in Inja have always been a fascination of mine, and something that allways seems to remain at the bottom of my 'to-do' list. But for what its worth I will follow your progress with interest and envy…

What figure scale and ratios have you considered?

Mal Wright Fezian28 Oct 2010 1:54 a.m. PST

Wonderful paint job on the figures but the scenery does not do them justice. Really well painted figures deserve to be displayed on scenery that matches their quality….and those are really well painted!

I think those are very nicely painted, especially the flesh tones.

If I had to offer a constructive criticism, it would be to suggest using slightly different shades of each colour, from one figure to the next.

Indian firearms could be quite ornate and inlaid with ivory, etc so you can plausibly depart from the standard wooden musket paint job:

I don't know what other figures are in this range, but did you know the Indians of the era still had cataphract cavalry? There is an example of their armour datd 1790ish at the Wallace Collection in London, looks a bit like this:-

Probably only a few score bodyguards to the Khasi of Kalabar or whoever would have had this, but still quite fun on a tabletop.

Keep posting, they're good.

Didn't they have elephant mounted cannon?

Upplander28 Oct 2010 8:20 a.m. PST

Thanks for the encouragement and tips gents. 4th Cuir, there are a couple of armoured cavalry figures in their range so I will have a unit as you suggest. A bodyguard or above average unit (cant have "elite" as the cavalry was pretty low capability at this time). The units will be our standard 24 figs for infantry and 12 figs for cavalry. Not a ration as such but the unit sizes work well on our 10'by 6' table. Thanks Dutch I am aware that he wasnt Wellington at the time but if the title is good enough for Jac Weller then its good enough for me lol.

Very nice!

Thanks for sharing, like these exotic units.
We are doing 7YW in India in 15mm but when we get around doing the French revolutionary period in 25mm somehow India (and carabean) will fit in.

I have the same figures-wonderful figures but really big. I use them for 1783 in India.

Very nice pictures and an agreeable chamge from our usual diet. I wondered if any of the Foundry Indian mutiny range might be useful as some of the Indian figures are quite generic and they pre-date the current Foundry style disliked by so many.

Sparker28 Oct 2010 6:40 p.m. PST

Is Sarn't Sharpe around?

arthur181529 Oct 2010 4:39 a.m. PST

In the books, yes – he is commissioned for saving Wellesley's life in India; in the TV series, no – this incident was moved to Portugal, and Sharpe only went to India after Waterloo, along with Harper.

Upplander29 Oct 2010 7:52 a.m. PST

John I have had a look at the Foundry range. I do like their Elephants (with howdah and with artillery limber. They might be useful.

Sparker01 Nov 2010 5:28 p.m. PST

Thanks Arthur, but I'm sure I've seen a 'Prequel' fairly recently on TV where Sharp is a Serjeant – the one with the renegade John Company officer who slaughters a whole fort, and Sharpe misses out cos he went of for a slash and then lay doggo….

arthur181502 Nov 2010 4:29 a.m. PST

And then returns, years later, after the Napoleonic Wars to meet the renegade again! I've seen it too.
I think this story was cobbled up for the television…

Really too bad the defunct and lamented London Warroom 'India' impressive range has not be ressurected as yet.
