I can't wait to see what he does with what he got so far:

Is anyone else as excited about this project of his?

Heck yea, but I have a question…

One of the figs( On the right column, third group down, second from the right) looks to have a net. Who makes that fig?

I think it's Pulp figures pack PHP 8 in the Personalities line.

These are some of the figure I got, so I can pick one to play my La:

I think this is the figure Matakishi has for La:

She's definitely exotic enough to play the part:

CC, I love your thickly link-littered threads. Always lots of cool info and pictures there.

Cacique Caribe04 Dec 2008 5:23 p.m. PST

LOL. If an image is worth a thousand words, I guess I've spoken volumes on this. :)

PS. Honestly though, I've gone back to older threads where links no longer work and I rather over-link than lose all references and go crazy. :)

Reaper did a 'RHASIA' zombie/voodo queen fig that might work and I think I might still have some of my old DGUSA 'Martian princess with knife' figs…(she's 'clothing challenged'…like La…)

Slishfully,

Hasslefree's Taxxis would make a superb La, IMO. Minus the scythe or sword, of course.

link

I think replacing the sword with a sacrificial dagger would not be too hard…

WarWizard04 Dec 2008 7:48 p.m. PST

All those figures look great. Gives me lot of ideas. Tarzan and his apes vs the Nazis for example.

Cacique Caribe04 Dec 2008 8:16 p.m. PST

WarWizard,

I don't remember if the last few novels in the Tarzan series have him fighting Nazis, but he was constantly fighting Germans in Africa, Japanese and Communists too:

Tarzan vs Nazis was one of the last movies Johny Wiesmueller did.

The Gray Ghost05 Dec 2008 5:45 a.m. PST

Hasslefree's Taxxis would make a superb La

I agree but useally I have to many little rleatives running around at My games for that to be used.
So while I might pick her up for My collection I need something a little more dressed for playing with.

WarWizard05 Dec 2008 7:57 a.m. PST

When I said Nazis I meant WWII Germans. Not sure why I specified Nazis. But any type of WWII Germans would be good oponents I think.
Also Tarzan vs the Amazon Women.
I like that Hasslefree figure also, but like Gray Ghost would not be apprortiate for the PG crowd at my house. I will have to keep an eye open for a sutiable figure and beastmen.

Roderick Robertson Fezian05 Dec 2008 9:52 a.m. PST

Tarzan belongs to the Great War, fighting the Germans of East Africa. (Tarzan the Untamed)

The Shadow05 Dec 2008 2:23 p.m. PST

*Also Tarzan vs the Amazon Women.*

That was "Tarzan and the Amazons". Not that it matters, but someone might want to find it.

For those who want to know, there are Nazis in two Tarzan films. "Tarzan Triumphs" and "Tarzan's Desert Mystery"

altfritz05 Dec 2008 3:30 p.m. PST

Reaper does a nice female vampire that looks like a clothed version of Taxxis – same or similar hairstyle IIRC.

This one:

CC, do you dream of La in the wee hours of the morning?

I'm worried for you my friend.

Now me… I'm the Dejah Thoris type, myself.

Something about an egg-laying woman that just does something for me…. sigh….

;-)

Cacique Caribe05 Dec 2008 5:13 p.m. PST

Matakishi just updated his site:

link

This is what he told me in an email:

"Hi Dan,
I'm working on Tarzan at the moment, hoping to finish before the end of the year. Last week I finished the beast men of Opar, Korak's Great Ape troops and a gorilla. Painting the chimpanzees as we speak (well, not literally). More beasts to come along with the safari and personalities, Tarzan, Jane, La etc.
I have some Romans too for the lost legion but they might not get done this year. Also on the lookout for some suitable 6mm mounted troops for ant men. They might not end up riding antelope though.
It is very wet and cold here so varnishing and consequently photographing has been delayed. Pics soon though.
Paul"

So glad I'm not the only one in La-La-Land!

Warrenss2,

If not La of Opar, then give me Pelluciar's Dian the Beautiful:

I also like the idea of Opar being very Egyptian-like:

CC: That last Reaper figure, Shal Shabbath or whatever, fits two requirements: PG rating and Egyptian-y. Although I really like the vampiress that altfritz pointed out above, as well. Heck, you could turn the sarcophagus into a sacrificial altar in no time.

Cacique Caribe06 Dec 2008 5:27 p.m. PST

Dian is an exotic wild girl (not afrait to wear furs and use stone tip weapons). Dejah seems to aristocratic – like if everything that touches her has to be gold.

La kinda like a middle of the road kind of girl. :)

She is an exotic wild beauty who likes to accessorize with gold jewelry and daggers.

CC

Warrenss206 Dec 2008 6:35 p.m. PST

Not to mention… La likes wild, hairy, rough dudes.

Now I understand why you like her.

CC… you sly dog, you.

LOL

Matakishi: "I have some Romans too for the lost legion but they might not get done this year."

I would love to see Matakishi do a section of a lost Roman city in the jungles of Africa!

CC

Cacique Caribe13 Dec 2008 4:23 a.m. PST

Guys,

You know what? The more I look at this Frazetta illustration, the more I like Matakishi's idea of an "Egyptian" La:

picture

link

Hmmm. That would mean that my Opar would have to be an abandoned Atlantean outpost built in a proto-Egyptian style! Imagine that. An Egyptian ruined city, but in the middle of the jungle.

I still think I will have a dome or two, just to do ERB's description some justice. :)

CC

Warrenss213 Dec 2008 7:04 a.m. PST

I think it would be very easy to have the "steps" of civilization happening thus…

Atlantis… makes various colonies one of which is Opar, built on the shores of an inland sea…

Now Egypt could be another colony that has just forgotten it's history or they could have copied the Atlantean civilization from it's colonies.

What about the Central and South American civilizations? According to the book "The Ra Expeditions" (D@MN good read!) they had A LOT in common with the Egyptian civ… enough to make the author, Thor Heyerdahl, think that there was a connection between the two. Maybe Egypt and the America's civs were from Atlantis?

I like the Cork Lord's (Matakishi) mini better. With it's Egyptian style it could be used for other things than just Oparian gaming. (She Who Must Be Obeyed, pulp, other lost civ madness, etc…)

Warrenss213 Dec 2008 7:07 a.m. PST

I know he got his beastmen from the Ral Partha, but I wonder what they were called?

Cacique Caribe13 Dec 2008 12:30 p.m. PST

Warrenss2,

Matakishi called them Taers in his photo caption. If so, then this link lists them as "11-468 Taers Monsters":

If I were to make something like that for the gaming table, do you have any suggestions on how to:

1) Make the curved wall;
2) Make it look imposing, without taking over the entire room;
3) Making it as a ruin, not as a pristine city

Thanks.

CC that city pic is shiny!! (Serenity coined term that I sometimes use)

Is that an actual model or an artist's picture?

Man, I would love to be able to have the skills to make something like that!!!

I guess I could use some of these pointers to get the right effect on that rounded wall and gate:

Cacique Caribe09 Jan 2009 10:25 p.m. PST

Maybe I should do something generic enough that it could be used as Opar and Osgiliath:

Minus the LOTR statues, of course.

CC

Alxbates14 Jan 2009 10:50 p.m. PST

You could always make the statues removeable, or have an ape or sun-god statue you could switch out for the LoTR statues.

Cacique Caribe14 Jan 2009 11:02 p.m. PST

Alex,

I agree. That will have to be the way to go, for the sake of versatility.

Perhaps having a "Flaming God" icon or carving for Opar?

Aside from a great concept of Oparian males, Vallejo captured some of the dome structures I have always envisioned for Opar:

CC, how do you find this stuff?!?!

Cacique Caribe16 Jan 2009 4:33 p.m. PST

"CC, how do you find this stuff?!?!"

Where there's a will, there's a way!

I was debating what sort of idol or temple wall carving to use to represent the "Flaming God" at the altar of Opar (apparently a representation of the Sun God):

erbzine.com/mag19/1937.html

Instead of just some common sun symbol, I wanted something a bit more exotic.

Inspiration hit just as I was getting in an elevator the other day . . .

Imagine this symbol, but with flames along the circle:

picture

What do you guys think?

CC

The Shadow16 Jan 2009 9:35 p.m. PST

>What do you guys think?<

Even with the flames it looks too modern. Even futuristic. Almost Sci-Fi. Opar is an ancient civilization, so i'd be thinking ancient symbols.

Warrenss217 Jan 2009 6:01 a.m. PST

Maybe a Stargate Atlantis-ishy type of symbol or perhaps something even older…
link
The Cthulhu runes at the bottom of the list…
I also like the Common Tongue one too… it's readable if you look closely.

Cacique Caribe17 Jan 2009 7:22 a.m. PST

Shadow,

That Schindler logo does look a little bit like the SG-1 symbol, doesn't it?

picture
link

In the Schindler one, the Sun is the most prominent symbol, which would be proper for a "Flaming God" altar.

I was hoping to make it look a little more archaic though. Maybe something like this, but with a piramid on the bottom (in remembrance of any pyramids back in Atlantis):

picture

Though I wanted something that looked proto-Egyptian, the Egyptian Ra head thing I was considering at one point is just a bit too clean-looking:

link

Plus, Burroughs does say it is a "flaming god", not just a plain circle.

Warren,

That reminds me a lot of these:

I love the Omniglot site:
