My (very few) naval have waves on their bases, but they're neither 3D nor painted: I bought paper with a sea surface printed on it and put on top of the base.

I paint waves on some and have 2D waves on others

I started with painting waves and wakes and have shifted to water texturing material from Vallejo with painted wakes.

I recently did my first naval minis for Mantic Games' Armada. I painted waves and wakes on the ships: parzivalsplace.blogspot.com/2024/03/come-sail-away-with-me-mantic-games.html

Here's a closeup WIP shot. In play the bases aren't all that visible, due to the size of the ships, so the arm's length appearance works pretty well, I think:

I was lured to open this topic because I thought it would about "women warriors" of the Navy. They were still called "Waves" back in the prehistoric days when I served.
