For your miniature wargaming (land combat only), do you use the same scale figures exclusively, or do you use different scale figures for different games or rulesets or periods?

Different scale for different games. 40mm and 28mm.

Different sizes (25/28mm, 15mm, 6mm) for different periods although the vast majority of my periods and miniatures are 25/28mm.

Anything from 5mm to 28/30mm, depending. And I've an irritating number of armies in three different scales.

6mm, 10mm, 15mm, 1/2400, 1/3000, 1/4800, 1/6000

Yes, if I have it in 15mm, I want it in 28mm. If I have it in 28mm, I want it in 15mm. Different gaming experiences.

Perris070701 May 2024 2:46 p.m. PST

Different scales for different games. 28mm, 20mm, 15mm, 6mm for ground combat. But most of my 28mm is because that is what my weekly group uses for most of our games.

Sadly different scales. Even the same armies in different scales. Madness!

Greylegion01 May 2024 4:46 p.m. PST

All 28mm.

3mm to 54/60mm, depending.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP01 May 2024 5:35 p.m. PST

2mm for travel, 6mm for mass battle and 28mm for smaller actions and skirmishes. Can't expect one scale to cover all circumstances. I have a full range of screwdrivers, too.

There is also some 10mm ACW to take advantage of certain rule sets. And out in the garage are 1/72 and 54mm plastics. And my CLS 30's stay in Pendleton with their friends.

Personal logo gamertom Supporting Member of TMP01 May 2024 5:45 p.m. PST

ACW: 5/6mm, 15mm, 25/28mm
Napoleonics: 10/12mm, 15mm, 25/28mm
WWII: 10/12mm, 20mm

In over 45+ years of buying miniatures, it's hard not to get the same forces in different scales, even to play the same rules.

Luckily I remain one scale 1:1.

However, for my land combat games, it is different scales for different periods and rules. I play mostly 28mm, but also do 10mm/1:144 and 6mm.

I did do 15mm but gave it up in favor of more skirmish sized 28mm games as I just clicked with that better.

28mm fantasy mass land battles, and 54mm Army Men games. Cheers!

Grelber01 May 2024 8:48 p.m. PST

Mainly 25/28 mm, but also a lot of 15mm and even some 20 mm. I almost forgot the 20s and was feeling pretty proud of myself for going overboard with the different scales/sizes. Guess I don't have all that much self-control after all.

15mm for most periods – 1/32 for World War II and 1/144 for WWI Aircraft

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP01 May 2024 10:45 p.m. PST

Different scales depending on what I want to do: usually micro (1:300-ish) for company or conceivably battalion engagements, 25mm for platoon or squad engagements. I'm generally playing in relatively hard science fiction, contemporary, or near-future settings.

Titchmonster01 May 2024 11:31 p.m. PST

Alll of them!

Martin Rapier02 May 2024 12:08 a.m. PST

2mm, 6mm, 15mm, 20mm…. Often the same period and even the same units in some cases!

advocate Supporting Member of TMP02 May 2024 1:17 a.m. PST

Different scales, 2mm, 10mm, 15mm, 20mm, 28mm. Sometimes with the same rules (but not at the same time).

GildasFacit Sponsoring Member of TMP02 May 2024 1:56 a.m. PST

2mm, 3mm, 6mm, 10mm, 15mm, 20/25mm, 28mm & 54mm

Mostly the lower 4, getting progressively less until about 10 54mm gladiators. 15mm are DBA armies, 20/25mm are for VBCW & 28mm are skirmish gaming Pirates. Smaller scales are almost all mass battle armies from Ancients to RCW.

ZULUPAUL Supporting Member of TMP02 May 2024 3:06 a.m. PST

I have duplicate DBA armies in 25/28 & 15mm.

martin goddard Sponsoring Member of TMP02 May 2024 4:20 a.m. PST

I stick with 15mm in order to make the most of space and my scenery collection.

Timbo W02 May 2024 4:34 a.m. PST

Different scales for different periods

6mm: ACW
15mm: ECW, SciFi
20mm or 1/72: Ancients, Napoleonics, WWII
25/28mm: Fantasy, Dark Age, Medieval

mildbill02 May 2024 5:14 a.m. PST

All in 15mm except for 25mm ACW. If I was starting in WWII I would use 10mm now.

Dagwood02 May 2024 5:38 a.m. PST

While I have 6 and 15mm armies, mostly unpainted, my painted figures are nearly all 25/28mm

ccmatty Supporting Member of TMP02 May 2024 5:47 a.m. PST

15mm WWII and Arab/Israeli Wars, 20mm WWII and Modern, and 28mm Napoleonic, ACW, WWII, fantasy, 30K, and 40K…

Wow, I have way too manner unpainted figures…

KarlBergman02 May 2024 8:02 a.m. PST

Different Scales. 6mm for WW2+ ground but 15mm for other periods.

IronDuke596 Supporting Member of TMP02 May 2024 9:34 a.m. PST

All 28mm.

ron skirmisher02 May 2024 9:43 a.m. PST

54mm for WWII, Sino-Japanese war (pre WWII), and Mexican Revolution & 28mm for Horse and Musket armies.

Dave Crowell02 May 2024 9:47 a.m. PST

For land combat 2mm to 54mm! Some periods in multiple scales.

14Bore02 May 2024 10:40 a.m. PST

One scale Napoleonic guy, do have some 28mm D&D but haven't played them in 40 years

Totally!

Now days its 54mm War of 1812 and 54mm WWII, although my War of 1812 is now slipping into 54mm Napoleonics also.Just to beautiful to stop.

TimePortal03 May 2024 6:05 p.m. PST

Yes. When I first started, I played 15mm and 1/285.
About 20 years later I started painting 25mm colonials and Battletech.

Last Hussar04 May 2024 2:09 a.m. PST

Because I'm a REAL wargamer I have different scales for the same period. Sometimes the same rules…

:)

UshCha04 May 2024 2:23 a.m. PST

Last Hussar +1

Actually I am a reluctant 1/72 scale gamer, far too big to be any real use for gaming, but the model oriented folk insist on this scale.

The other is the one and only true scale 1/144 ;-). This is my perfect scale, 6mm are too small for me as I am always a 1 to 1 man gamer. Like Last Hussarr same rules diffrent figure scale and groundscale, however some aspects of the rules become more prominent at diffrent scales. Particularly moving longer distances at high speed is less relevant at for the smaller 1/72 scale battle field as it's too snmall.

The Last Conformist06 May 2024 4:33 a.m. PST

I've used 10mm, 15mm, and 28mm recently.

Captain Pete06 May 2024 9:29 a.m. PST

I have mostly 1/285th scale WWII but do have some Napoleonics and American Civil War in 10mm.

I am happy to play in other scales and periods but don't have the miniatures.
